Nitish Kumar as the Opposition's Presidential Candidate? Here's what Bihar's Chief Minister has to say about it.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Nitish Kumar dismissed the rumour, claiming he had no intention of running for President.
  • The NCP has stated that if Nitish Kumar breaks his connections with the BJP, it will back his candidacy.
  • The President of India is the country's head of state and the country's first citizen.

On Tuesday, Bihar's political class debated Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's suitability for the position of President of India, which would become vacant in a few months.

Prashant Kishor, a political strategist who met Nitish in Delhi last week, and Maharashtra leader Nawab Malik, who stated his party, led by Sharad Pawar, was ready to support the JD(U) leader for the country's highest constitutional office provided he broke relations with the BJP, began the ball rolling.

When media questioned Nitish Kumar, he replied with folded hands that he had no intention of running for President.

"I'm not sure how such rumours get out in the open. I never considered running for President of the United States "When he arrived in Bhagalpur to relaunch the 'Samaj Sudhar Abhiyan (Social Reforms Campaign),' he stated.

Meanwhile, former Chief Minister and HAM leader Jitan Ram Manjhi said he was unaware of the event but wished Nitish Kumar well.

"I desire for him to rise through the ranks of the country's constitutional hierarchy. I send him my warmest greetings "he stated

The RJD, which was founded and is led by Kumar's arch adversary Lalu Prasad, has mixed feelings about the CM's name being floated for the country's top office.

Tej Pratap Yadav, Prasad's rebellious older son, questioned how a "murder accused" could be elected to the top job. He was alluding to Kumar's acquittal by the Supreme Court in a nearly three-decade-old case.

He said petulantly, "Lalu ji would become the prime minister," notwithstanding his father's conviction in yet another fodder scam case.

"As a Bihari, I will be happy if a politician from the state becomes President," RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari remarked, "but Kumar, formerly viewed as PM material by Laluji, has lost his credibility following his realignment with the BJP."

President Ram Nath Kovind's term ends in July. Members of both Houses of Parliament, as well as legislative assemblies from states and union territories, make up the electoral college.
